“Cloudcroft, N.M." is Martin’s 2005 travel landscapes in collage. This series follow on from the artist’s most extensive study, “Spirit of the Land”. In 2004 the Hawaii seascapes from this series, sold out quickly.

For the new “Cloudcroft” series, Kay works from sketches, photographs and memories of her travels to capture the majesty of the Southern N.M.mountains. “This area calls me back,” says Martin, who admits to being more of a beach lover.“Cloudcroft has so much natural beauty - the grand scale of sweeping vistas, mountains and plains. I have come to appreciate the tall, stately trees. This area is amazing, so alive with earth’s splendor, color and shapes. “

Collage - the application of many layers of rice and fiber papers - is a perfect
medium to express & explore the earth's own layering techniques. Rice papers are first colored and then applied to built the abstract terrain. Layer upon layer of paper, color and texture mimics the earth expressing herself. Elements of wind, water and sun color the mountains and her flora.

Each painting speaks of the majesty of the Cloudcroft area. There are waterfalls, meadows filled with flowers and refreshing afternoon hailstorms to feed the trees. The pace is laid back, the people are friendly in Cloudcroft and each painting reflects the simple, natural beauty of the area.
